After 70+ years, beloved California restaurant abruptly announces closure; employees left scrambling

Bobbi’s Coffee Shop & Cafe, a beloved restaurant in Cupertino, California, is permanently closing its doors on December 31, 2025, after over 55 years in business (over 70 years if you count the time before the name was changed). Known as Bobbi’s Coffee Shop & Cafe since 1970, the closure came as a shock to employees, who were only given around one week’s notice of the closure.

The classic diner, known for its nostalgic atmosphere and comfort-food staples like eggs Benedict, French toast, and hearty breakfasts, has been a fixture of the South Bay community since 1970. The restaurant served breakfast, brunch, and lunch, closing at 2:00 PM.

Bobbi’s Coffee Shop & Cafe’s website offers some history about the establishment, writing, “Established in 1953 as a local Cupertino & Saratoga Breakfast restaurant by Taro Yamagami and later renamed in March of 1970 by Bobbi Thorne as Bobbi’s Coffee Shop, this long established staple restaurant has stood the test of time by passing down its time tested famous homemade recipes.”

Surviving ups and downs over the years

Bobbi’s storied history includes multiple closures and reopenings over the decades. It previously shuttered in 2012 and again during the COVID-19 pandemic before being revitalized by local owners and community support.

Despite its resilience, this latest chapter appears to be the final one for the beloved café, as the business license for the current owners expired on December 8th, 2025.
