Thousands of people gathered throughout the Bay Area on Saturday to celebrate Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, with music and vibrant powdered colors.
In downtown San Jose, home to one of the largest celebrations, people danced to “Badri Ki Dulhania,” the title track from a romantic Hindi comedy, in Discovery Meadow Park. Clouds of orange, yellow, purple and blue wafted over people’s heads as they threw the colored powders at each other. Among them was Deb Paul, a Pleasanton resident who came to the festival with six other families.
“This is a tradition for us, reliving our childhood with the colors,” said Paul, her face covered with blue and purple powder. She grabbed a handful of orange powder and threw it at a child, laughing together, before the two joined a group of a dozen others to dance.
