Western Division patrol officers in San José wrapped up their last night’s shift with two people in handcuffs and two loaded guns off the streets, according to the San Jose Police Department. One arrest started as a public drinking contact near downtown and escalated when a person ran, police said. The other began when officers spotted a vehicle driving erratically, which later crashed into a power pole. Officers recovered a loaded handgun with an extended magazine concealed on one suspect and a second loaded firearm from the damaged vehicle. Police said the driver was booked for DUI, hit-and-run and illegal possession of a firearm, while the other person was booked on weapons violations and resisting arrest.

According to the department, the night’s first gun arrest grew out of a straightforward quality-of-life check. Officers contacted a group drinking in public near downtown when one individual took off running. The person was taken into custody shortly after, police said. During that contact, officers reported finding a loaded handgun with an extended magazine hidden in the suspect’s pants. Western Division patrol officers handled the arrest, which the department framed as part of routine street-level enforcement.
In a separate incident, officers said they spotted a vehicle driving erratically. A short time later, they found it had slammed into a power pole. The driver allegedly tried to leave the scene but was quickly placed under arrest, according to the department.
