San Leandro Safeway Stickup Triggers Chase, Two Nabbed As Third Slips Away

A midafternoon robbery outside a San Leandro Safeway turned into a brief pursuit and foot chase last Thursday, ending with two suspects in custody and a third on the run, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say that at about 3:59 PM, a woman was robbed near the Safeway at 699 Lewelling Boulevard in San Leandro. Deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and units from the Oakland Police Department responded as three suspects took off in a dark-colored Chevrolet Volt. A short vehicle pursuit and a chase on foot ended with two people detained, while one suspect remained at large.

Details posted to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Real Time Information Center say three suspects were involved and that deputies recovered what the post described as a replica firearm. The RTIC post says ACSO air support and a Raven unmanned aerial system were launched and that Flock automated license-plate readers helped direct patrol to a possible suspect vehicle. The sheriff’s update also says the driver was arrested for felony evasion and hit-and-run and that a passenger with outstanding felony warrants was booked into SRJ, while the third suspect “was not located” at the time of the posting, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Facebook reel.

How Deputies Closed In

The RTIC post says deputies tracked the suspects using a mix of air support, a Raven UAS and automated license-plate readers as the Chevrolet Volt headed west on I-580, then exited onto MacArthur Boulevard. Oakland police helped set up a perimeter while the sheriff’s Raven maintained visual contact with the Volt. A traffic stop ended when the car struck another vehicle on MacArthur, causing minor damage and no reported injuries. Tools such as Flock ALPR have become common in Bay Area vehicle investigations, according to tracking by the Atlas of Surveillance.

What Deputies Say About The Arrests

The sheriff’s update says deputies caught the driver during a foot pursuit and detained a second suspect without incident, and that both were booked into Santa Rita Jail. According to the post, the driver faces felony evasion and hit-and-run counts, while the passenger had outstanding felony warrants. Investigators continue to search for the third person and are asking anyone with video or tips to contact law enforcement, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

What Could Happen In Court

Felony evasion and hit-and-run are treated as serious offenses and could carry felony penalties if prosecutors file charges following the sheriff’s investigation. Charging decisions and any additional counts related to the robbery will be determined by prosecutors after they review evidence and witness statements…
