San Francisco facing traffic nightmare as full closure of eastbound I-80 looms

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Bay Area drivers are facing a potential traffic nightmare as a full weekend closure of the eastbound Interstate 80 freeway in San Francisco is scheduled for later this month. The closure will see eastbound I-80 closed between 17th and 4th streets in SF, beginning Friday, April 17 at 11 p.m. and lasting through Monday, April 20 at 6 a.m.

“Throughout the weekend, motorists will not be able to drive along this stretch of freeway (approximately 1.6 miles) and are urged to use public transportation when possible,” said Caltrans.

The southbound and northbound Bayshore Freeway connector ramps to Highway 101 will also be closed that weekend, Caltrans said. During the closure, the final eastbound exit off I-80 will be Vermont Street.

Caltrans says drivers who miss Vermont will be directed to the 9th Street offramp and redirected through Bryant Street to get back on the freeway at the 5th Street onramp.

Freeway closures for weekend of April 17-20:

  • Eastbound I-80 Bayshore Freeway between 17th and 4th streets
  • Southbound Highway 101 Bayshore Freeway to eastbound I-80 connector ramp
  • Northbound Highway 101 Bayshore Freeway to eastbound I-80 connector ramp

Drivers are advised to avoid this section of I-80 for the entire weekend…
