California gubernatorial candidate Matt Mahan outlines his priorities for Golden State

The race for California governor has seen a series of shakeups as candidates battle for one of two spots in the November runoff. KTLA’s Annie Rose Ramos has been sitting down with the top polling contenders for in-depth conversations. Here is her interview with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

Gas prices and energy policy

Ramos:Let’s get to the gas tax. You are calling for the suspension of the gas tax.

Mahan: I would suspend it while prices are going through the stratosphere and then look to reform it. We have a failure on both sides of the political spectrum here. We have a war that Trump started that we don’t know how to get out of that’s driven up prices on the one hand, but we also have Democratic policies that long before that drove up prices.

Ramos: You’re dealing with a state that relies so much on foreign oil. We’ve lost refineries like Phillips 66. Valero is shutting down. Would you try to get any of these refineries to reopen?
