Pavement busted open during water main break in Studio City

A powerful water main break tore through a Studio City street early Wednesday afternoon.

Sky5 footage from above the area of Ventura Boulevard and Big Oak Drive shows a plume of water surging up from underneath the roadway around 1:15 p.m.

Water was seen flowing down Big Oak Drive – a dead end road situated on a hill – towards Ventura Boulevard, causing at least one eastbound lane of Ventura to be temporarily shut down.

Video posted to the Citizen App shows the water flowing near the feet of the person who was recording; they eventually made it up to the burst water main itself, which caused substantial mudflow and debris to be spread across Big Oak Drive.

By 1:45 p.m., crews had arrived at the scene, but water was still gushing out of the ground.

What caused the pipe to burst initially is not known.
