Here’s a roundup of recent incidents and announcements from Ventura County agencies:
Chlorine leak impacts Ojai Valley school
A chlorine tank leak on Friday caused an Ojai Valley private school to shelter in place and cancel classes for the day.
The leak was reported around 6:50 a.m. at Besant Hill School of Happy Valley, 8585 N. Ojai Road, said Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Andy VanSciver.
An active leak in a 500-gallon chlorine tank used for a swimming pool was discovered when the fire department arrived, he said.
Chlorine gas is poisonous and has the potential to kill, VanSciver said.
A hazardous materials crew responded and was able to control the small leak. As part of the response, the Ventura County Fire Department, Oxnard Fire Department and Ventura Fire Department all responded, VanSciver said.
There were no injuries, he said, and students and faculty sheltered in place until the fire department cleared the scene around 10 a.m.
Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run
Authorities in Ventura have arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run pedestrian fatality from early January.
