Man crashes car after police said he fled from hitting, injuring pedestrian in Athens

An Athens man faces felony charges after he hit a pedestrian in downtown Athens last week, rendering the victim unconscious and seriously injured, according to Athens-Clarke police.

The crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, when the victim was crossing West Broad Street in the crosswalk near North Hull Street.

The pedestrian, William G. Sweet, 35, of Ventura, Calif., was unconscious and medics had to tend to a serious leg injury before he was transported to a local hospital.

The suspect, Victor Manuel Adame, 26, of Brickleberry Ridge, fled from downtown in his 2014 Honda Accord, according to the report.

Police said that after the crash, captured on a surveillance camera, a number of 911 calls from witnesses came in and police issued a lookout for the white Honda last seen traveling east on West Broad Street.

An officer on patrol reported he saw the car speeding east on Lexington Road and that the driver was the only occupant.
