Ventura City, working with EJ Harrison and Sons, has started a Food Waste Recycling Program. This is in response to Senate Bill (SB) 1383, a new state law. The bill’s goal is to reduce the amount of organic material in landfills and cut emissions. Residents who have a yard waste cart should put their food waste in a secure bag and place it in the cart.
If residents don’t have a yard waste cart, they should put bagged food waste in the container provided by their property manager. The program accepts all food waste, such as meat, bones, fish, shells, dairy, bread, fruits, vegetables, and coffee grounds. The waste should be bagged and placed in the correct container.
At the recycling facility, food waste is separated from yard waste. It is then recycled into products like compost and renewable energy. The program is part of Ventura’s efforts to manage waste sustainably and lessen the environmental impact of waste disposal.
Details about the program and answers to common questions are on the Residential Services webpage. Information about SB 1383 is on CalRecycle’s Webpage. The program is a move towards better waste management in Ventura.
