McDonald’s proposed for westside Ventura faces opposition

A Ventura McDonald’s not yet built has already drawn staunch criticism from neighbors.

The restaurant, proposed for 215 Rocklite Road near Stanley and Ventura avenues, was debated at a Westside Community Council meeting on Feb. 7. An empty warehouse and adjacent buildings are on the site.

Many attendees were upset, saying the restaurant will bring traffic, homeless people and unhealthy food to the area.

Gina Young, who lives near the proposed McDonald’s, said Stanley Avenue already has congestion from nearby Highway 33.

“You’re going to have people coming for events like X Games or other things at the Fairgrounds,” Young said. “We had the Thomas Fire and people got stuck on the Avenue and they couldn’t get out.”

The project is being developed for McDonald’s Corp., said city spokesperson Heather Sumagaysay in an email. A franchisee or operator will be selected at a later date. The applicant is Bickel Group Architecture in Newport Beach.

A design review committee hearing will likely be held in two to three months, Sumagaysay said. The proposal would ultimately go to the Planning Commission.
