Ventura Pier to open to public Saturday

Visitors will be able to walk the Ventura Pier, which has been closed to the public for nearly 18 months, on Saturday.

The announcement was made at a media-only event Tuesday morning at the pier, 750 E. Harbor Blvd.

The pier gates will open at 8:30 a.m. to the public on Saturday with no formal event or ceremony, said Heather Sumagaysay, city of Ventura spokesperson. Barbara McCormack, fleet and facilities manager for the city, will do the honors.

City staff members and Ventura County officials with local and state agencies responded quickly to ensure the pier’s safety when it was battered by storms, said City Manager Bill Ayub before the event.

“This pier behind you, what we see today, is a year and a half in the making,” Ayub said on Tuesday. “What I mean by that is it was closed to our community.”

Mayor Joe Schroeder said the pier’s closure since January 2023 was due to significant storm damage.

“This closure was necessary to ensure the safety of our community, and it’s been a long journey for us,” he said.
