Prescribed Burn Friday at 40-acre Site in Dangermond Preserve

The Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve, known for its diverse and exceptional coastal landscapes, is slated for a prescribed burn Friday, an initiative aimed at ecological restoration and wildfire prevention. Approximately 40 acres of land, predominately choked with non-native annual grasses and invasive weeds, will undergo controlled burning to pave the way for native plant restoration efforts this coming fall.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC), in collaboration with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, has planned this burn to significantly reduce the presence of invasive species and accumulated thatch. This carefully managed fire is a critical step toward rehabilitating the site to a vibrant coastal grassland habitat, an endeavor essential for the ecosystem’s health and resilience.

Officials have chosen May 30 for the burn, with the exact timing contingent upon favorable meteorological conditions. The primary goal is to execute the burn when weather patterns are most likely to direct smoke away from populated areas, minimizing the impact on air quality and resident well-being in surrounding communities.

Preparation for this ecological management tool involves close coordination between TNC, local fire authorities, and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD). A qualified burn boss from TNC will lead the operation, ensuring the burn’s execution aligns with best practices for safety and effectiveness…
