CSU professor faces 20 years in prison for allegedly throwing tear gas back at ICE

A California State University Channel Islands professor faces federal charges after being accused of throwing a tear gas canister back at federal agents during a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Camarillo this summer.

Ventura resident Jonathan Caravello, 37, was indicted by a federal grand jury. He faces one count of assault on a federal officer using a deadly or dangerous weapon for allegedly throwing back a tear gas canister the agents shot into the crowd, prosecutors announced this week.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison. He was released July 14 on a $15,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned in the coming weeks in Los Angeles federal court…
