Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips Hype Up Crowds at Santa Barbara Bowl

“You wasted life, why wouldn’t you waste the afterlife?” frontman Isacc Brock of the indie rock band, Modest Mouse, questions in his existential hit, “The Ocean Breathes Salty.”

Looking around the packed Santa Barbara Bowl on a perfectly balmy summer night, friends laughing and dancing together, or people’s eyes simply closed in pure musical enjoyment, it was clear that no one in the audience was wasting life.

In fact, the Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse show on Friday had some of the most carpe diem energy of any of the Bowl shows I’ve seen recently. Openers Dehd kicked things off with an intimate guitar-driven set urging people to shake off the work week with their dynamic surf-rock stylings…
