Lunchtime Locations: Carnitas El Rey

Foothill Technology High School (Foothill Tech) students earn off-campus privileges when they reach their junior year. With this new freedom comes an expansion of students’ lunch options. No longer limited to the bland and repetitive cafeteria, they spread “off campus” to find the ideal spot. Those with a car drive, those without walk, but regardless, Foothill Tech life wouldn’t be the same without neighboring restaurants.

The corner of Evergreen Drive and East Main St. is home to one of the best burritos east of the Avenue. Carnitas El Rey’s second location in midtown Ventura – their first being in Oxnard – offers a simplistic menu with consistent execution. Students looking for a quick and easy meal that offers large portions, great taste and isn’t a corporate chain are in luck.

I would recommend ordering a burrito. While there are a few other options, part of the beauty of El Rey is in the concise, uncomplicated length of its menu. Instead of arguing with yourself or the person at the counter over what you want, knowing what you want before you walk in the door provides a convenient ordering experience.

When you step inside, the spacious room feels a little empty. One of the flaws of El Rey is the atmosphere. Most customers get their food to go, leaving the large inside space feeling awkward. However, when patrons are present, the restaurant is pleasant and homely…
