Residents raise sonic boom concerns as launch tempo increases at Vandenberg

Residents voiced concerns about overnight rocket noise and potential property impacts during a packed community forum Feb. 20, as U.S. Space Force leaders hosted the first Vandenberg Mission Update speaker series at the DeWees Community and Senior Center.

The forum, outlining the base’s expanding role in national security space operations and a rising launch cadence, came hours before a launch lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 1 a.m.

Col. James T. Horne III, commander of Space Launch Delta 30, and Dr. Kent Gee, a physics professor at Brigham Young University, fielded questions from residents during the meeting, and allowed residents to engage directly with Space Force leaders and experts about launch operations, noise research, and related community impacts…
