DA: Former Hopland man found guilty of drugging, raping co-worker

A former Hopland resident was convicted this week of raping a co-worker after spiking her drink, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

According to DA David Eyster, defendant Matthew R. Mayo, 45, formerly of Hopland and most recently of Petaluma, was found guilty May 20 in Mendocino County Superior Court of raping an incapacitated person, administering a drug to assist in the perpetration of a sex crime and distributing a photograph of an intimate part of a person’s anatomy without their consent.

Eyster described the crimes as occurring in May of 2020 when Mayo was “a licensed respiratory therapist working at Howard Hospital in Willits” and invited a co-worker to his house to drink beers and watch movies, offering his guest a beer “which she accepted without knowing that he had added a central nervous system depressant zolpidem, which is marketed as Ambien.”…
