Former students return to educate in Cotati and Rohnert Park

With the school year about to begin, it’s interesting to note that nearly two dozen Cotati-Rohnert Park employees, mostly teachers, attended schools in the district, many graduating from Rancho Cotate High School. About half of these spent a year or two in one of my English classes. All are a credit to the community and the school district. Eight of them spoke about how they feel returning to work in classrooms and schools in their hometown.

Many of the thoughts expressed reflect what every teacher wants to be for their students: a positive role model, giving back to the community, demonstrating great relationships with former teachers, sharing a history with their students, student buy-in noting teachers’ dedication knowing that their teachers were former students, sharing the excitement of being a large part of the community, all connecting and “rooting for each other,” sharing a sense of belonging, able to create more opportunities based on their own experiences in the school district, learning still from former teachers, modeling acceptance of all no matter what their background, and showing a desire to have all students feel fondly about school.
