Family, friends, and fans gathered at Petaluma’s historic Mystic Theatre over the weekend for a celebration honoring the life, music, and legacy of Donna Jean Godchaux MacKay.
Coinciding with what would have been Donna’s 79th birthday following her passing from cancer on November 2nd, 2025, the two-night affair brought together some of her closest collaborators for a rare reunion of the Heart of Gold Band—a group she founded with her late husband, Grateful Dead keyboardist Keith Godchaux.
Born Donna Jean Thatcher in 1947 in Alabama, she began her music career as a session vocalist at the legendary Muscle Shoals studios, where she sang on dozens of recordings, most famously Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds.” After moving to the Bay Area and marrying jazz pianist Keith Godchaux, she famously marched up to Jerry Garcia and introduced her shy husband as “the new keyboard player for the Grateful Dead.” She was right about that, and six months later she’d join the band along with him…
