Two-Car Crash Near Sonoma Ignites Brush Fire, Sends Two to Hospital

A two-vehicle crash near Stage Gulch and Watmaugh roads south of Sonoma sent two people to area hospitals and sparked a vegetation fire that burned about 1.25 acres before firefighters contained it. Crews were called to the scene shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, and arrived to find one vehicle already engulfed in flames, with fire spreading into nearby brush.

According to The Press Democrat, one person was trapped inside a vehicle while another managed to exit on their own. Firefighters and paramedics treated the person who had been trapped, and both occupants were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. The fire district has not released information about the extent of their injuries, per the same report.

Bystanders who arrived at the scene helped move one of the vehicles and its occupant away from the spreading flames, the fire district told the outlet. California law offers some protection for that kind of intervention: under California Health and Safety Code Section 1799.102, good-faith civilian rescuers who render emergency aid at an accident scene — including pulling people from burning vehicles — are generally immune from civil liability for injuries that result, absent gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct, according to the Dordulian Law Group.
