Investigation Launched into Inmate Death at Marin County Jail

The Novato Police Department has commenced an investigation into a death that occurred in custody at the Marin County Jail, as confirmed by officials. The identity of the deceased inmate is currently withheld, pending notification of family members.

The incident unfolded early in the morning, with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office reporting that at around 5:45 a.m., a jail deputy, during a routine check, found an inmate in need of urgent medical attention. This occurred within the confines of the inmate’s single-occupancy cell. Immediately responding to the situation, deputies called for support from the San Rafael Fire Department (SRFD) and provided first aid to the inmate.

Despite the rapid response and efforts of the SRFD personnel, the inmate was pronounced dead at 5:56 a.m. The exact cause of death remains undetermined at this stage, with a post-mortem examination scheduled later in the week expected to provide more clarity.

In an effort to ensure an independent investigation, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office has handed over the investigative responsibilities to the Novato Police Department. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, through its Coroners Division, will oversee the coroner’s inquest into the incident.
