Convicted Bay Area murderer accused of killing man in prison

( KRON ) — A convicted murderer from Santa Clara County is accused of killing another inmate in a California prison on Wednesday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CCDR) said.

Luis Alvarez, 30, is one of two men that CCDR said attacked and killed 29-year-old Anthony Alvarez at High Desert State Prison in Susanville. The other suspect is 41-year-old Vincent Martinez from Kings County.

Officers responded to a dayroom in the prison at 5:45 p.m. to find Luis Alvarez and Martinez attacking Anthony Alvarez, CCDR said. Staffers stopped the attack and provided medical aid to Anthony Alvarez. He was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m.

Luis Alvarez and Martinez were placed in restricted housing as jail officials and the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office investigate. Officers recovered two homemade weapons.

Anthony Alvarez, the victim, came to the High Desert Prison from Fresno County, where he was serving a 10-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder.
