The dueling statements are the result of a dispute between the county Sheriff’s Office and its rank-and-file deputies. The union has complained that the Sheriff’s Office changed its minimum staffing level policy without union input and refused to meet about an expiring overtime policy.

The disagreement captured the attention of the Board of Supervisors, which has expressed support for the union and hired an outside investigator, retired California superior court Judge LaDoris Cordell, to look into the discord.

Santa Rosa firefighters responded Friday to the fourth grass fire this week in the area of Southwest Community Park, officials said.

The fire was reported about 1:06 p.m. and burned about a quarter-acre in an open field west of Meadowview Elementary School on Dutton Meadow, fire officials said in a press release.

Children at Meadowview Elementary briefly sheltered in place in the school because of smoke and ash drifting in the direction of the school, firefighters said.
