SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. – Sonoma County Superior Court has given Sonoma State University (SSU) the green light to move forward with a controversial budget-reduction plan, the university announced.
The court denied a preliminary injunction and two writs of mandate filed by seven students aiming to halt the university’s proposed cuts. SSU plans to eliminate several academic programs and disband its NCAA Division II athletics program to offset a projected $23.9 million budget deficit.
The judge determined that SSU’s decisions were not arbitrary, stating, “This Court cannot conclude that the decision to eliminate the athletics program amounted to an abuse of discretion.”…
