Controlled Burn Scheduled at Mount Tamalpais State Park to Mitigate Wildfire Risk

The Marin County Fire Department, in collaboration with Marin Water, will be conducting a prescribed burn operation at Mount Tamalpais State Park, ahead of a window scheduled between July 1 and July 3. This controlled burn is set to occur along the northern side of Bon Tempe Lake, with a potential area coverage spanning up to 40 acres. Notifications to avoid overwhelming emergency services by not calling 9-1-1 to report smoke have been emphasized to the local community.

According to an article from the Marin County government, the prescribed fire may cause temporary inconveniences. Sky Oaks Road will be open, but visitors could face short delays because of smoke and temporary lane closures while fire engines work there. Meanwhile, the entirety of Sunnyside Trail will be off-limits for the duration of the operation. Signs will be in place and must be observed by visitors.

The final decision on the burn will be announced on the morning of ignition, dependent on weather, fuel conditions, and air quality to ensure a safe execution. This evaluation is critical to manage the fire behavior effectively and keep the impact of smoke on the community to a minimum. Local news and social media accounts, including Facebook, X, Instagram, and Nextdoor, will be updated to provide real-time information to the public…
