Highway 101 lane closures planned to prep for shift in carpool hours

The far left lane in both directions on Highway 101 in Sonoma and Marin counties are set to be closed at night starting Monday as part of the shift to new longer high-occupancy vehicle lane hours later this summer.

Caltrans announced Tuesday morning that crews are scheduled to switch HOV lane signs along northbound and southbound Highway 101 along 52 miles from Interstate 580 in San Rafael to Windsor as part of the final steps of the Marin–Sonoma Narrows project set to wrap this summer.

Signs along the corridor are being modified or replaced with signs displaying new uniform carpool hours. These signs are in the median of Highway 101, so the far left lane in both directions are scheduled to be closed during these hours Monday through Friday:

  • 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. northbound and southbound in Sonoma County, starting Monday
  • 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. northbound and until 6 a.m. southbound in Marin County, starting Aug. 5

The new signs will be installed until mid-August, according to spokesperson Matt O’Donnell. That’s prior to the third lane opening in Marin County in late August or early September…
