Unveiling Monte Rio’s massive new redwood preserve

Redwoods park expands, preserving 1,500+ acres

Monte Rio’s backyard just got a whole lot bigger — and greener. In late June, Sonoma County added 1,517 acres of redwood forest to Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park, effectively quadrupling the park’s size. The newly acquired parcel, purchased from Mendocino Redwood Company by Save the Redwoods League and donated to Sonoma County Regional Parks, creates a contiguous protected area of more than 34 square miles of forest stretching west from Monte Rio. Locals are looking forward to new trails and recreation opportunities in this once-logged tract, now permanently protected for public enjoyment and habitat conservation.

Supervisor Lynda Hopkins called the expansion “a phenomenal win not only for the West County, but for all of Sonoma County … a vital part of our region’s ecological health, climate resilience and cultural heritage.”

River renewal

Our cherished Monte Rio sign is back up, and the bridge retrofit project continues. The county says a retrofit is good for another 10-15 years.

Fire department joins forces

This summer, Monte Rio Fire Protection District officially reorganized and became part of the Gold Ridge Fire Protection District. The Monte Rio station remains active, now benefiting from expanded staffing and resources. Our hero Baxman stays on as an assistant chief. A new parcel tax will apply this fall, helping fund improved fire response and planning throughout the combined district.

River safety reminders

As summer crowds return to the river, first responders are urging everyone to use caution, wear life jackets, and keep a close watch on children. Though the Russian River may appear calm, currents, debris, and underwater hazards can create dangerous conditions. Local groups are continuing efforts to increase river safety awareness through signage and outreach.

The Rio Theater revival

The Rio Theater is buzzing again. This month, it hosted a community music event featuring local bands and a festive atmosphere. The historic venue has also resumed movie nights, live performances, and other creative programming. Earlier this summer, RioFest filled the Monte Rio Amphitheater with music, food, and family fun, drawing a large crowd and showcasing Monte Rio’s growing arts scene.

Bohemian Grove back in session

Across the river, the Bohemian Grove’s annual summer retreat is underway. This long-standing all-male gathering of invited members and guests continues to draw attention and speculation, even as it remains a private affair. For Monte Rio, it brings a short-term economic lift each July, although we’ve heard from local staff that their wages are reduced this year…
