Suspect’s fire escape attempt thwarted by police after Target theft

(KRON) – A man who shoplifted hundreds of dollars of medications attempted to evade police by using a fire escape, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

Petaluma PD was alerted to a theft in progress at a Target at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police were informed that a man was placing several over-the-counter medications into a black duffel bag and was attempting to use a fire escape to flee.

Arriving officers and Target Loss Prevention personnel waited outside the fire escape door for the suspect, who was identified as Santa Maria resident James Johnson. Police said Johnson tried to throw the duffel bag into a nearby dumpster, but was detained.

In the duffel bag, authorities found more than $900 worth of over-the-counter medications, and more than 15 grams of suspected fentanyl was located on Johnson…
