Free groceries! Lobo’s Pantry opens for the fall semester

Lobo’s Pantry, the student-run food pantry at SSU, opened its doors for the Fall semester last Tuesday afternoon. Located in Zinfandel Village next to the mailroom, the pantry primarily provides food and hygiene products, including produce, snacks, soap, and shampoo.

Run for students by students, it is a community effort run entirely by the Associated Students of SSU and made possible by volunteer work. Lobo’s Pantry primarily consists of donations from local sources like Redwood Empire Food Bank and Farm to Pantry, continuing the program’s work with the community. You can also find produce grown in the campus gardens.

Student volunteers help operate the pantry’s daily functions, whether it be behind the scenes or at the counter. You can find your fellow Seawolves restocking, placing orders for the pantry, and checking students out. “Working here, I’ve become more of a people person, and it’s rewarding to be able to spread news of the Pantry around,” said Mari Guerrero, a fourth-year student. “It’s really nice to see how students have benefited from it.”

Students can pick up groceries from the pantry once per week and will simply need their student ID to visit. However, first-time applicants will need to fill out a prescreen form, which will determine their eligibility for certain items. The pantry also offers eligibility advising for CalFresh, a government-based food assistance program helping students pay for groceries…
