In a move to alleviate homelessness, San Rafael city officials, in conjunction with Marin County, have revealed plans for a temporary housing solution projected to transition into long-term affordable housing. Per the City of San Rafael’s announcement, a temporary shelter comprising 65 cabins will be located at 350 Merrydale Road. Offering a plethora of on-site services, the shelter aims to serve those currently at the Mahon Sanctioned Camping Area and Andersen Drive.
The shelter is expected to operate until June 30, 2027, with the potential to extend if further funding is secured. Marin County has committed up to $8 million for the property’s acquisition and setup. In exchange, the city is to zone the property for a minimum of 80 permanent affordable housing units by 2028. San Rafael Mayor Kate stated, “This is a focused, time-limited solution that helps our most vulnerable neighbors now and sets the stage for permanent affordable housing on this site,” according to the City of San Rafael.
The cabins will feature basic amenities such as heating, electricity, and personal storage, coupled with communal kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry facilities. Comprehensive on-site support includes services like case management and behavioral health connections, designed to ease transitions into lasting housing solutions.
