We have an excellent Junior Ranger program in our state parks for the ages of 7 – 12. These programs help to open their young minds to science and the outdoors. The ranger led activities include hikes, with highlights of the flora and fauna along the way. They will learn to identify tracks, observe wildlife and join hands-on activities. Visit the website: Junior Ranger Program – Adventures in Learning. Sonoma County has nine State Parks and beaches. Within an hour’s drive or two, there are many more opportunities to visit State Parks and get a feel for this incredible resource.
Our own Sonoma County has regional parks of its own, some include camping opportunities, dog friendly hikes, ocean-side trails and some amazing vistas all in our own backyard. Visit: Sonoma County Regional Parks There you will also find useful links to other details like gift memberships.
In a letter to those who participated in the Caspar Cove Project in Mendocino County, the group recognizes the selfless hours, days of devotion and support given in 2025 to combat the imbalance that has decimated the kelp forests in our nearshore environment. This population explosion, of the destructive purple urchin, has unleashed the hungry mouths in their millions to devour the kelp, leaving Urchin barrens, areas of the underwater space devoid of any growth save algae that grow tight to the rocks. The effort has expanded into Sonoma County with a similar plan that hopes to rescue Stillwater Cove, a few miles north of Fort Ross. This is a beautiful Regional Park well known to divers and fishermen for years. To read the details and look at the dates for 2026 visit: casparcoveproject.org…
