Living with parents: The good, the bad, and the ugly

After a long day of studying computer science and working as a Starbucks barista, 20-year-old Santa Rosa Junior College student Liam Oliviera hoped to relax by watching a classic movie. Unfortunately, his stepfather, who he lives with, impeded his plans.

“Last month I was watching [David Lynch’s] ‘Blue Velvet’ on the TV and my stepdad would keep coming into the living room, and it would always be during the explicit scenes,” Oliviera said with a laugh. “It’s like this should be for my eyes only.”

For most, the college experience means moving away from parents, learning to be independent and experimenting — but in Santa Rosa, this couldn’t be further from the truth. According to an SRJC study, 79.4% of students live with their family or partner, and those in the former category face the unique challenge of navigating early-adult life within the confines and privileges of their parents’ home.

Although Oliviera’s stepfather unfortunately created an awkward environment for viewing Kyle Maclachlan’s tender lovemaking scene, Oliviera is still grateful for the benefits that come with his living situation…
