Rain-Slicked 101 Horror Near Petaluma Kills Sonoma County Woman

A rainy-night crash on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Petaluma turned deadly yesterday when a BMW left the roadway, killing a Sonoma County woman and leaving two other people with major injuries.

Officers were dispatched shortly before 8:45 p.m. to the southbound lanes just south of the Petaluma Boulevard South overcrossing, where they found the BMW off the freeway. Two passengers had been ejected from the vehicle, while the driver remained inside, according to investigators.

One of the ejected passengers, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and the remaining passenger were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries. Investigators told Bay City News Service that speed and wet roadway conditions were likely contributing factors, according to SFGATE.

The Bay Area dealt with showers and gusty conditions yesterday, leaving roads damp into the evening commute and raising the risk of skids and loss of control. Meteorologists warned that damp pavement can significantly cut tire traction and make high-speed travel more dangerous, as reported by KCRA.
