VENICE — Residents in Venice and Nokomis can have an American flag placed in their yard for patriotic holidays, then taken down a day or two after.
This service is offered by the Venice-Nokomis Rotary Club’s “Flags Across Venice-Nokomis” program.
It started in 2018 when volunteers placed 80 flags in yards. Last year, the number increased to 800. The club is pushing for 1,000 this year.
The fee is $50 a year, with the proceeds being distributed to local veterans organizations.
“It’s very successful,” said Jack Kurschner, chairman of the program. “I’m very pleased with it. It’s a lot of work but it’s worth it.”
Just recently, Rotary was able to donate a total of $28,000 to My Warrior’s Place, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The holidays when the flags will be placed in yards include Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, 9/11 and Veterans Day. Because Labor Day and 9/11 are so close together, flags will remain in yards for approximately a week.
