Group looks to protect wildlife near West Port: North Port Environmental Conservancy seeks funds to buy another parcel

NORTH PORT — The North Port Environmental Conservancy is looking to raise $10,000 by Feb. 28 to purchase land next to the West Port community to protect its wildlife.

The conservancy has 37 parcels in the area already. Each parcel is purchased through donations, as would be the ¼ acre in Port Charlotte they are eyeing as well.

“Unfortunately, most builders do not choose to conserve anything on land parcels and few to no local native plants or trees that once grew on the parcels are replanted,” Barbara Lockhart stated in a press release.

The 510(c)(3) organization buys land plots solely to protect them.

It is entirely volunteer-run.

Donations can be made in the following ways.

“Conserving natural land in our neighborhoods allows for the preservation, protection, education of, and co-existence with, our local native flora and fauna. Especially with threatened species such as the gopher tortoise and Florida scrub jay,” Lockhart stated in the news release.
