FEMA help now available in Sarasota, Manatee County

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Help is finally on the way for the people of the Laurel Meadows subdivision.

Over the weekend, the White House declared Sarasota and Manatee Counties as major disaster areas.

That designation allows homeowners impacted by Tropical Storm Debby to apply for assistance.

Monday, workers from FEMA went to the Laurel Meadows subdivision to start the process of signing people up.

That aid will greatly help people like Carol Myers.

“My husband is in a rehab right now,” Myers said. “He’s been in and out of the hospital, so he needs a lot of assistance.”

Myers sat with two workers from FEMA in her front yard as they signed her up for help.

“They told me I’m in good hands, and I shouldn’t worry, cause I have no flood insurance,” said Myers.

She said just having someone there after a week of flood waters and uncertainty is helpful.

“Oh, my God,” Myers said. “I tell you, this whole time anybody who is nice to me, I start to cry. So, that’s what it means to me.”
