In Sarasota and Manatee counties, the primary election often has an oversized impact due to the large Republican base in the area.
In Sarasota County, some of the biggest primary contests are for County Commission seats – Alexandra Coe vs. Teresa Mast in District 1 and Tom Knight vs. Neil Rainford in District 3 – and School Board, with Liz Barker vs. Karen Rose in District 2 and a three-way fight in District 3 .
There are also primaries for seats on the controversial Sarasota County Hospital Board and a Democratic primary for the Sarasota City Commission , among others.
County Commission seats dominate the Manatee County primaries, including Carol Anne Felts vs. Steve Metallo in District 1; April Culbreath vs. Talha Siddique in District 3; Robert McCann vs. Raymond Turner in District 5; and George Kruse vs. Kevin Van Ostenbridge in District 7.
