Sarasota cat shelter rescues multiple dogs in emergency situation after Hurricane Debby

Cat Depot ‘gone to the dogs’ after answering rescue call

Cat Depot, a Sarasota animal rescue and adoption center, recently opened its doors to 18 dogs rescued from a emergency case in Hamilton County.

The dogs were found in the woods in Hamilton County following Hurricane Debby. The dogs’ elderly owner was gravely ill and taken to a medical center for treatment, leaving no one to care for the dogs, who also required medical care. Hamilton County Animal Control in conjunction with Florida State Animal Response Coalition and the Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations reached out to Cat Depot for assistance.

“Cat Depot is above all an animal rescue,” Cat Depot senior operations director Diana de Veer said. “While our primary focus is cats, we will provide assistance whenever and wherever we can when animals are suffering. ”

While it might seem unusual to contact a cat organization to help with dogs, de Veer said, Cat Depot’s Community Center is an excellent location to temporarily house the animals while they undergo medical exams and other assessments. The dogs will be provided with veterinary attention while partner organizations work to find placements. Donations to support their care can be made at catdepot.org/hamilton-county-dog-rescue .
