Shark’s Tooth Fishing Tournament reflects the essence of Venice

VENICE – Now in its third year as a September event hosted at the Crow’s Nest, the Venice Shark’s Tooth Fishing Tournament partnered 33 athletes Thursday with 20 fishing captains for a day of fun and fishing, capped off by lunch and fishing tales – none of which involved the proverbial “one that got away.”

“Hello everyone, well it’s been another fantastic year without any storms again, so praise the Lord for that,” said Mark Pagliaro, a client of The Haven, introduced by Venice Marine Patrol Officer Paul Joyce “as one of the people who could talk as much about fishing as he can.”

Pagliaro said he caught more fish this year then quipped, “Now I’ve got dinner that I’m taking home.”

Typically the athletes release their catch after reeling them into the boat – or onto the dock at the marina.

“This year was our 22nd year of doing this,” Joyce said prior to an awards ceremony where each athlete received a replica shark tooth medallion on a shark tooth fishing festival lanyard.

“I’ve been hearing a lot of stories; the athletes  have caught lots and lots of fish today.”
