Portions of North Port flood, up to 5 inches of rain in some areas

NORTH PORT — Portions of North Port were flooded on Tuesday due to an overnight drenching.

North Port officials said some areas of the city received up to 5 inches of rain.

At 11:15 p.m., the water level at the Big Slough was at 2.8 inches. At 2:45 a.m., it was at 7.94 inches.

Because of the rapid increase, a number of roads and neighborhoods were again inundated.

City officials said Flint Drive, North Salford Boulevard, Ponce De Leon Boulevard in the North Port Estates, and Eldron Avenue — a road frequently used to get back to Lamarque Elementary School — all experienced high water levels.

The flood-prone Lady Slipper Avenue area, downhill from Sumter Boulevard, also had standing water on some of its streets.

“Road under water” signs were up in the neighborhood with city trucks onsite Tuesday.

The streets in the city of North Port were designed to flood to keep water away from homes, according to city officials. They purposely act as makeshift canals after heavy rain.

At the moment, there is not much that can be done to prevent street flooding, according to staff.
