Sarasota man arrested in fatal DUI crash, failed to stop at red traffic light: police

Officers arrested a Sarasota man in connection to a fatal DUI crash on Thursday.

Video evidence and witness statements show that Joshua Slieff, 31 , was speeding when he rear-ended a Toyota that was stopped at a red light, Sarasota Police officials said. The crash happened Wednesdayat the intersection of Fruitville Road and Tuttle Avenue at 9:51 p.m.

The passenger of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver remains in critical condition. Officers believe that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.

Slieff faces charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI with serious bodily injury and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test. He is being held in the Sarasota County Jail without bond.

As of Oct. 24, in Sarasota County, there have been 5,325 crashes. Of those, there have been 41 deaths and 3,263 injuries. In Manatee County, there have been 4,967 crashes and of those, there have been 41 deaths and 3,514 injuries, according to the Florida Crash Dashboard .
