Vet who was in bay for Japanese surrender to speak

NOKOMIS — On Sept. 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay, when the Japanese officially signed the country’s surrender in World War II, Robert Faulhaber was in the bay, too.

He was on a nearby ship, the USS Detroit.

At 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, the Nokomis resident will be at the clubhouse of the Villages of Milano to speak for a Veterans Day celebration. He was a machinist mate first class in World War II.

At the Nokomis ceremony, he will be presented with a ships bell, which he has never received.

Faulhaber, 99, will be showing a sketch he made of the harbor that day that identifies many of the ships that were there.
