Six Sarasota schools will implement new traffic safety measures using cameras to ticket speeding as students return in January.
The new School Speed Zone Safety Program , a partnership between the city of Sarasota and the Sarasota Police Department, will use cameras to capture speeding during school hours and levy a $100 fine to violators. The program launches Jan. 6 and will include a 30-day grace period during which violators will receive warnings instead of fines.
The following schools in the city will implement the program:
- Alta Vista Elementary School
- Southside Elementary School
- Tuttle Elementary School
- Sarasota Military Academy
- Sarasota High School
- Cardinal Mooney High School
When the camera detects a vehicle traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit, it will take a picture of the vehicle and the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a violation notice. Violations will not result in points on a license and will not affect insurance.
