In dog years, it feels like it’s taken 49 years for the Suncoast Humane Society to build a new animal shelter in Englewood.
After raising $13 million of the $17.5 million needed, the Suncoast Humane Society campus on Worth Avenue is nearing completion.
And it looks great.
The Daily Sun got a sneak peek at the new campus recently.
Guests and potential new pet owners will soon be able to tour the 12,666-square-foot, state-of-the-art animal shelter. It features two giant housing pods for cats, and a dog kennel shelter with outdoor play spaces including a pool and dog runs.
Each kennel in the sound-proof shelter has a doggie door leading to a fenced-in outside area. Dogs can get sun, fresh air and access to run and play.
There’s also a 4,359-square-foot modernized veterinary clinic for vaccinations, low-cost spay and neutering and other services.
“It was also very important to build a (7,308-square-foot) multi-purpose building for community gatherings, youth programs, pet therapy, animal behavioral training, puppy yoga classes and other events at the shelter,” said Christine Varcoe, Suncoast Humane Society spokesperson. “It has a full kitchen.”
