Teen who ran man over with his car in Bradenton gets 12-year prison sentence

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A teen who Bradenton police said ran over and tried to kill a man on the Palma Sola Causeway back in August 2023 will spend the next several years in prison.

A Mantee County judge sentenced Connor Fleener, now 18, to 12 years in the Department of Corrections with credit for time served in juvenile detention, followed by 15 years of probation, the Bradenton Police Department said Wednesday.

Fleener pleaded no contest to the following charges in February:

  • First-degree attempted murder
  • Leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury
  • Driving with no valid driver’s license and causing serious bodily injury

Detectives said they determined that Fleener and the victim, Juan Houston, had gotten into an argument on the side of the Causeway on Aug. 8, 2023. Fleener eventually drove off, but then turned around, accelerated and intentionally struck Houston with his car, police reported.
