A St. Petersburg man has entered a guilty plea to charges of bank fraud and mail theft. Ah’Jhzae Diamondric Artag Berry, who is 30 years old, is now facing a considerable span of potential prison time after admitting to a series of crimes that targeted hundreds of individuals and breached the sanctity of the U.S. Postal Service, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Berry’s run of illicit activities spanned from January to June of 2024, striking under the cover of night. Alongside unidentified accomplices, he utilized a stolen key to gain access to postal receptacles and proceeded to illegally procure a variety of financial instruments, such as checks, credit cards, and gift cards, from unwitting victims’ mail. The U.S. Attorney’s statement notes Berry faces up to 30 years in federal prison for each bank fraud count and could additionally spend up to 5 years for each mail theft count.
With the consequences laid bare, Berry and his collaborators manipulated the stolen checks in attempts to fraudulently deposit them, managing to potentially amass over $380,000 before their scheme unraveled. The impacts of these actions stretched far beyond the financial, with the victims left to grapple with the violation of their personal security and trust in systems meant to protect their property and privacy.
