Cat illness outbreak causes temporary shutdown of Manatee County shelter

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) – Manatee County Animal Welfare has paused all cat intakes at Bishop Animal Shelter due to an outbreak of feline distemper, a serious and highly contagious virus that affects cats.

“This is a serious and urgent situation,” said Sarah Brown, director of community and veterans services. “Our staff is working hard, but they need help. We’re asking the community to get their cats vaccinated and help protect animals across the county.”
