Maryland pizza chain with 70 years of history opens first Sarasota area restaurant

A Maryland-based pizza chain with 70 years of history has opened its first Sarasota area location.

Ledo Pizza is now open at 1091 Toledo Blade Boulevard, North Port, in the former Michelangelo space. Originally opened in 1955 by Bob Beall and Tommy Marcos in a shopping center near the University of Maryland, Ledo has since expanded to more than 100 locations in multiple states. While Ledo Pizza has a few other locations currently open in Florida — in Tampa, Ormond Beach and Ave Maria — North Port is the first in Sarasota-Manatee.

Made with smoked provolone cheese, a sweet tomato sauce and a thin crust on a rectangular pie, Ledo’s pizza was the template for what has come to be known as Maryland-style pizza.
