The National Weather Service in Tampa has issued a heat advisory for a portion of the west central Florida region, the advisory remains in effect from noon today until 7 PM EDT this evening, cautioning that “heat index values up to 112 expected,” which suggests heightened risks for heat-related illnesses during this time — residents are advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors where possible, and check on those vulnerable to extreme temperatures, as noted on NWS Tampa’s website.

The advisory covers several cities including Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota, affecting a broad swath of communities across the region; in tandem with providing these warnings, officials emphasize the importance of taking proactive steps such as drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and keeping a vigilant eye on relatives and neighbors particularly those who are young, elderly, or otherwise at increased risk of suffering from the heat, as the day’s high is expected to soar near a scorching 98 degrees.
